I was thinking very long which park should I start with. I have to admit that I have a special sentiment to Berlin green spaces. It’s really a great city where art of landscape architecture is still in use.
Fortunately last month I had very important meeting in Berlin, which turns out to be very successful. That was my first day of a new adventure in my garden historical life. Back than as a reward I visited the Nature Park Südgelände.
The Nature-Park Südgelände is situated in Schöneberg-Tempelhof, which is southern part of Berlin. It’s a 18 hectares green triangular and was till 1952 part of Tempelhofer marshaling yard. Out of use it was being taken over by nature.
In the year of 1987 the “citizens action committee Nature-Park Schöneberger Südgelände” was founded. Since the beginning of 1999 the park is under landscape and nature protection.
From 1996 it was designated as a Nature Park and in 2000 thanks to the help of interested citizens opened to the public and was recognized as a “worldwide project” of the EXPO 2000.

It is worth to mention that The Nature-Park impresses with its biodiversity: 30 bird species, 57 spider species, 95 wild bee species, 15 grasshopper species as well as over 350 plant and 49 mushrooms inhabit this area. Remarkable are robinias, wild roses, wild fruits, yellow Sand-strawflower and rare Habichtskräuter
Park offers two trails.
It links the dry meadows of the central clearing with the robinia forest and the valley path. Here you can find grass land with birch forests around. And all this let you forget the noise and traffic in the busy city.
A visit in the Nature-Park Schöneberger Südgelände is definitely worth it at any time of the season. From the early summer up until autumn beautiful colour combinations can be observed in the forest and on the lawn.
