Two Victorias in one Berlin

Two Victorias in one Berlin
Yesterday I was in Victoria Park. It opened in 1894. This park was in honour of Princess Victoria of Great Britain and Ireland, the eldest child of Queen Victoria of the United Kingdom and Prince Albert.
I really like all this wildness in the middle of a big city.

The other Victoria, which gave a name to another green public space in Berlin, was Princess Viktoria Luise of Prussia, the daughter of Kaiser Wilhelm II of Germany, and Great-Grand daughter of Queen Victoria. This time wasn't that a park but a square. Viktoria-Luise-Platz.
The Princess with her husband  and five children in the Sanssouci Park.
This little square was laid out in 1900, so my interest is quite big. I hope to find there a bit of an influence of secession.

The art is the closest neighbour of the wildness

The art is the closest neighbour of the wildness
I was thinking very long which park should I start with. I have to admit that I have a special sentiment to Berlin green spaces. It’s really a great city where art of landscape architecture is still in use.
Fortunately last month I had very important meeting in Berlin, which turns out to be very successful. That was my first day of a new adventure in my garden historical life. Back than as a reward I visited the Nature Park Südgelände.

The Nature-Park Südgelände is situated in Schöneberg-Tempelhof, which is southern part of Berlin. It’s a  18 hectares green triangular and was till 1952 part of Tempelhofer marshaling yard. Out of use it was being taken over by nature.

In the year of 1987 the “citizens action committee Nature-Park Schöneberger Südgelände” was founded. Since the beginning of 1999 the park is under landscape and nature protection.

From 1996 it was designated as a Nature Park and in 2000 thanks to the help of interested citizens opened to the public and was recognized as a “worldwide project” of the EXPO 2000.

The park consists of a great and fascinating combination of nature, train relicts and art. Relics of the railway were made into art objects for incorporation in the park. These include a steam train, water tower and a turntable. Visitors are asked to walk on separated pathways which run along the former railway tracks. This allows you to explore and experience the park on railway tracks and see everything from the perspective of a steam train. It’s pretty interesting feeling to visit the park and watch the nature like in a zoo. It gives you also a distance to the flora and fauna around you.

It is worth to mention that The Nature-Park impresses with its biodiversity: 30 bird species, 57 spider species, 95 wild bee species, 15 grasshopper species as well as over 350 plant and 49 mushrooms inhabit this area. Remarkable are robinias, wild roses, wild fruits, yellow Sand-strawflower and rare Habichtskräuter
Park offers two trails.
It links the dry meadows of the central clearing with the robinia forest and the valley path. Here you can find grass land with birch forests around. And all this let you forget the noise and traffic in the busy city.

A visit in the Nature-Park Schöneberger Südgelände is definitely worth it at any time of the season. From the early summer up until autumn beautiful colour combinations can be observed in the forest and on the lawn.

Neverending Story ... I hope so

Neverending Story ... I hope so
Wszystkie pasje i zainteresowania powstają z jakiejś ciekawej lektury.
To historie o zazdrości, miłości, nienawiści, marzeniach i tęsknocie.

Miłośnikom ogrodów i parków – polecam.
