First botanical garden of Mendel University in Brno was founded in 1926 as help for students of agriculture department. Later, in 1938, the garden was enlarged with arboretum needed for students of forestry.
Big development of the University forced to recreate a whole layout in the 70's.
Different sections were divided into topics and integrated with stone and metal sculptures.
Back than the botanical garden in Brno was very innovative and modern. Concrete elements had very futuristic character but also highlighted the all flora of the garden.
The most fascinating part is the 5 m. deep ravine with cliff made of concrete and stones, full of loose stones and alpine plants.
Huge panels made of concrete overgrown these plants are based on the wall of cliff. This looks like huge paintings painted with flora. Amazing!
On the bottom of the ravine is a small so-called "mini see", where the water is collected in the spring.
Another part of the canyon has a shape of an amphitheater.
There are many other nice surprises in this garden. And paradoxically it is still very modern and stunning for a viewer.
